Meet The Makers: Hammered Leatherworks

Q&A WITH ADAM & BEC FROM HAMMERED LEATHER GOODS

We were lucky enough to chat to the talented Adam and Rebecca Fogarty – founders of Hammered Leather Works. Based in Perth, they believe in lifelong learning and create beautiful leather homewares and unique ‘Just Stitch It’ Kits that inspire customers to create beautiful leather goods using the materials and instructions in the box. Visit us in store to check out their beautiful Braid Leather Hangers and Shelves – perfect for showing off your favourite plants.

How did you get into your craft? What has your journey been like?
Wow this is a big one! Rebecca has been crafting forever, but Hammered Leather Works itself is now two years old. We had a handbag and accessories label, all handmade by us, for five years before this. The handbags passed the time as something for her when our kiddies were small. We learnt a hell of a lot over the years and we began teaching what we had learned – it was that change that brought about Hammered Leatherworks as it is today. We dreamed it, planned it, funded it and took off with our teaching toolbox and zest to show everyone how awesome it is to work with leather.

What do you love most about what you do?
The designing and making, of course. Creativity is in our blood and always crazily at the forefront of Bec’s mind. You know all those light bulb moments? They always come right when you go to bed at night, and we’ll happily stay up for them!

Who or what inspires you?
For Bec, it’s more about colour and texture. We live on the outskirts of town in Perth, so our closest neighbours are decades old gum trees, kangaroos and blue tongues. Designing and making things that can slip in effortlessly next to native Australia and enhance what’s around us is what drives us.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?
Do it! If it was easy everyone would do it so be prepared, do your homework and crunch the numbers. If your idea is viable, totally go for it!

We believe life should be lived in beautiful, inspiring spaces. What does a beautiful and inspiring space include for you?
A couple of years ago we built an extension on our house. It was the first time we have been able to create, in reality, a space that inspires us. The walls are a warm grey adorned with natural timber peg boards, leather strap shelves and hanging planters, bringing the outside in! A raw timber desk is made from trestles which a big slab of wood sits upon. When we were looking at floor samples I could not go past the textured grey wood planks.

What’s your favourite plant or flower?
Ok, so right now I am digging Devils Ivy. I have one front and centre outside the kitchen window and I love how it’s drooping over the porcelain hanging planter. The String of Pearls next to it comes a super close second.

What are you looking forward to right now?
Bed! Crazy, I know, but I love that moment when you snuggle in under the cool cotton sheets and drift away.

Thank you so much to Adam and Bec for sharing an insight into your world.
Visit us in store to see their beautiful wares in person. We’re sure you’ll find something to add to your own beautiful spaces.
