YOUR GARDEN: WHAT TO DO IN SEPTEMBER

September is one of our favourite months for gardening. In Melbourne, the start of spring brings longer days, crisp mornings and gorgeous sunshine (most of the time). There’s plenty to do in the garden in September as plants wake from their dormancy. Read on and get organised for this wonderful new season.

Give your garden a feed

Bring garden beds back to life by lightly raking and adding an organic mulch or compost. Your plants will be hungry after the cold winter so now’s the time to top them up with some organic fertiliser. This will help support the new growth that bursts to life in Spring and encourage strong, healthy, disease resistance plants. Finally apply a sustainable mulch that nourishes the soil and helps stop weeds and water loss. Always remember to prep your soil too before planting to give your new plants the perfect growing conditions.

Fertilise your fruit and citrus trees

Springtime means your beautiful fruit trees will soon blossom and grow fruit. Give them a helping hand with an organic fertiliser to help them through the process. Citrus plants are heavy feeders and like a good feed in September to sustain their new growth. Visit us in store to find the right one for your specific fruit and ask us any questions you might have.

Re-pot indoor plants

If you have indoor plants that need re-potting, September can be a great month to do so. Check the individual needs of each plant before re-potting as some plants like to be pot bound to encourage better flowering, such as orchids. Ensure you use a good quality potting mix with a fertiliser included. September is a great time to add a little extra food to your other indoor plants too. Give them a good drink to help them settle and pop them in their home.

What to plant

There’s lots you can plant in September, although don’t forget that in Melbourne we can still experience cold nights and the occasional frost. For vegetables, think carrots, parsnips, turnips, rhubarb, snow peas, beans, spring onions and leafy greens in the form of silverbeet, celery, rocket and spinach. It’s a great time to plant delicious fruits too such as blueberries, passionfruit, citrus trees and avocados.

Don’t be afraid to go wild with your herbs and create the herb garden you’ve always wanted. Now’s the time to plant rosemary, oregano, sage, dill, thyme, parsley, coriander and chives just to name a few!

Embrace springtime colour

For flowers, add beautiful pops of colour to your garden beds and plant springtime favourites like daisies, lavender, snapdragons, pansies, foxgloves, marigolds, sunflowers and dahlias.

Spring is the perfect time to come out from hibernation and start working in the garden again too. Enjoy the process of getting everything sorted before summer.
